DEFRAG~98.1 released // Thanks for your GameOff Love
Dear Defraggers, Windows 98-enthusiasts and Evil AIs,
First, I'm thrilled to see DEFRAG~98 was voted #6 in the Innovation category. It's my first submission to GameOff, after attempting in 2020, 2021, and finally completing something in 2022. Inspired by the charme of 90s computer interfaces and incremental browser games like Universal Paperclips, Kittens Game & Spaceplan I was happy to find a game concept fitting the Cliché theme.
The game does not run in a game engine, but only uses HTML, CSS & TypeScript – my trusty 2013 MacBook Pro struggles running any real game engine. The code is open-source and editable on github.com/max-vogler/defrag98, happy to see forks and accept pull requests.
I waited with the v98.1 release until the rating period is over. Now it's published and contains quality of life improvements that make it easier to understand defragmentation in the beginning and the progression of updates. I appreciate your patience playing a game with rough edges and taking the time to comment!
After this minor release, I don't think I'll have the time to continue development soon. Some things I didn't find the time for were:
- Building a Minesweeper clone, then unlocking auto-play options.
- Adding Clippy with a character arc as more and more computing power is unlocked.
- Adding background music, modem/hacking sound effects, and text-to-speech for some messages.
- Adding more glitch effects and changing the system theme for repeated playthroughs.
- Auto-saving the game state -- sorry, the game resets when you close your browser.
If anything sounds interesting to you, please reach out or send a pull request.
Thanks again for playing, voting for, and sending your comments!
Best,
mvx
